Twenty-inch laptops haven't exactly flourished, which is why the resilience of the HP Pavilion HDX-9000 (Penryn) is that much more impressive. The price tag is about the only thing that will make your jaw drop, but the new 1080p screen option and the nVidia GeForce 8800M GTS graphics card are welcome additions. What matters most about this refresh, perhaps, is that this is the first of what will be many laptops to receive one of Intel's latest Penryn processors. While performance scores didn't blow me away, they're fast enough to make the HDX-9000 a formidable entertainment PC. It's easily the best 20-inch laptop on the market, despite that market being a relatively small one. The HDX-9000 (Penryn) is the ultimate multimedia hub, showcasing Intel's latest processor, but the 15-pound chassis and $3,500 price tag are obstacles you'll need to come to terms with first.

For this powerful laptop, high-end features and cool design come with a hefty price tag.
Far from being a mere desktop replacement, the HP Pavilion HDX notebook is a multimedia powerhouse with a sleek design and a gorgeous 20.1-inch screen that will bring videos and games vividly to life. This update to the HDX line bumps up the processor from a standard Core 2 Duo to Intel's recently released Core 2 Duo Extreme but otherwise changes little of the original design and core features. Our system came fully decked out to match the new high-end CPU, bearing a commensurately steep price tag of $4300.
The new 2.6-GHz Core 2 Duo Extreme X7800 chip didn't have much impact on the unit's overall performance in our WorldBench 6 Beta 2 tests, as the new laptop earned a score of 85; the earlier version of the HDX with a 2.4-GHz Core 2 Duo T7700 received a nearly identical score of 86.

There are several interesting observations and recommendations we can make as a result of testing this veritable grab-bag of media PCs. First and foremost, money still talks loudly: if you've got the scratch necessary to purchase an HP HDX notebook, you can't help but be thrilled with the machine your dollars buy for you. That said, we'd recommend upgrading the 4,200-RPM hard disks to at least 250-GB 5,400 RPM models, if not their fastest (but alas also, smallest) 120-GB 7,200 RPM models. We figure you can hook up some external USB drives to this unit if you need more storage anyway. The Sony really impressed us with its combination of features and functions, including its Blu-ray player, and its reasonable price. That is, except for the god-awful control buttons built into the front edge of the keyboard deck. If you buy one of these puppies, spring for and use a wireless mouse and disable the Touchpad and its controls.

Although notebooks have generally been associated with mobility, it is perhaps not surprising that consumers are looking at bigger ones that can fulfill their needs. Speaking from experience, a large widescreen display increases productivity immensely and more users are concerned about this now. After all, the notebook population is expanding rapidly, as consumers abandon their dowdy desktops for more expensive but sleek notebooks. Not everyone will be enamored about mobility. To some, portability is a bonus rather than the most important requirement, as users want all the advantages offered by a desktop but with the caveat that it has the footprint and possibly the power savings of a notebook.

It's the best 20-inch laptop on the market—that is, if you're willing to shell out the money for both the computer and the chiropractic fees. Pros: Fastest Intel components available. River of LED-lit multimedia keys. HD TV tuner. Options for HD DVD-ROM and WUXGA screen in the summer. Good gaming scores. Best design for a 20-inch laptop. Great range of screen positions. Cons: Back-breaking monster of a laptop. Huge AC adapter. Exorbitant price tag.

As an entertainment powerhouse that will replace your desktop computer the performance and appearance of the HP Pavilion HDX seems to match up to its billing. However, Dell's 18-month-old offering seems to offer a better designed form factor with that handle and detachable keyboard. Expect a full review of the new HP Pavilion HDX when it comes out later in the year. Featuring a dual-hinged 20-inch widescreen display, Intel's next-generation Centrino technology, and all the multimedia bells and whistles you can dream up, the HP HDX is one smokin' desktop replacement. With a starting price of $2,999, and with our tested configuration costing somewhere between $4,000 and $4,500 (the company was still finalizing the price as of press time), there's no question that the HP HDX is a premium notebook.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT: C’est une carte graphique DirectX 10 de chez ATI en compétition directe avec les NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT. Apparue sur les HP Pavillion HDX 20" avec de bon benchmarks (avec le Intel T7700 Core 2 Duo) assez bon peut être placé en 1ère classe. Elle fera tourner vos jeux avec tout à fond. Grâce au moteur vidéo Avivo HD. Ce chip accélère le traitement de la HD pour les HD DVD, Blu-ray (Décodeur vidéo matériel pour H.264/AVC, VC-1, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4/DivX Video Codecs).
Tout comme la performance des cartes de première classe elle sont comparables aux cartes graphiques de bureau du même nom. Les tout derniers jeux tournerons de façon fluide avec les détails réduits (dans des résolutions moyennes).

Intel Core 2 Duo:
C'est le successeur du Core Duo avec des pipelines 5-20% plus rapides sans consommation supplémentaire. Comme une addition à la conception du Core Duo là existe un quatrième décodeur, une SSE-unité amplifiée et une unité logique arithmétique additionnelle (ALU). Le core 2 duo pour ordinateurs portables est identique aux processeurs de core 2 duo d'ordinateur de bureau mais les portables fonctionnent avec des tensions inférieures et une vitesse de Frontside. L'exécution des portables également synchronisés est 20-25% inférieure à des ordinateur de bureau en raison de fréquence d’horloge inférieure de Frontside et plus lents de disques durs.
